Ever Wonder About The Origins Of Like a Phoenix? Here They Are!
Like a Phoenix really started in the summer of grade 10 when Dane and Ben lived in close quarters for two weeks in Japan. The next weeks saw Dane showing Ben bands like Relient k and Thousand Foot Krutch, and an entire world of melodic rock that changed his admittedly very cynical view of being in a band and being a Christian. A year later the band was born in its earliest form with just the two of them in it, named after two of their friends, it had a revolving door of members, and band names until finally reaching the comfortable quintet it has turned into. This evolution took time, and saw Theo playing drums, and even bass temporarily before becoming a guitarist with Ben, and finally with Brennan on the drums and Stu on the bass, leaving the band undeniably with the strongest line up it has had yet.
The band has three songwriters, Dane, Ben, and Theo, which allows a lot of diversity in what we write. Dane has major influences like Thousand Foot Krutch, Ben having major influences such as Switchfoot, and Sanctus Real, and Theo having major influences like The Rocket Summer and Coldplay. The entire band are big Relient K fans, and appreciate not taking ourselves too seriously. Like a Phoenix is still just starting out but is developing its own interesting sound, over time.

Making of the Band
After Ben’s old band Shinbi collapsed, Ben thought it would be a good idea to start a new band. Dane wanted to start a band as well about this time so the two united to form Like a Phoenix. The original drummer of Like a Phoenix was David Catteral, Dane and Ben’s childhood friend. But David did not have real passion to be in the band. Dave was replaced by Theo, Ben’s younger brother, who has given Like a Phoenix the work ethic that we were lacking in before. The original bassist was John McCune, but due to his extremely busy schedule he was unable to make practices. Thus, we thought it best to replace him. Several line up changes later, we have Theo as a guitarist, Stu as a bassist, and Brennan Vermeer as a drummer to make Like a Phoenix what it is today.
